Dr. Harry Edwards was born in St. Louis and grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois. He completed his Ph.D. from Cornell University and has long been a powerful voice in sports. Dr. Edwards is Professor Emeritus in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley and was the architect of the Olympic Project for Human Rights.

In 2017, Dr. Edwards gave a talk at the Harvard Kennedy School entitled, From Robinson to Kaepernick: The Evolution of Athlete Activism
